Cross Country Skiing Holidays

Cross Country Skiing Holidays

When we think of skiing; images of hurtling down a snowy slope (and the bumps that often follow) often spring to mind.

Indeed, many thousands of tourists head for the slopes each year. From the Rockies to Romania, there’s no shortage of slopes for those seeking a holiday filled with fun and excitement (as well as some hot cocoa in front of a roaring fire after a hard day on the piste)

But why save your skis for the slopes? Away from the mountains there are vast areas of open snow and forest to explore. Those countries that are further North – such as Greenland and Finland – offer the chance to explore these vast open snowfields and picturesque forest habitats at your own leisurely pace.

There are a number of holiday companies – such as Marmot Tours - that specialise in cross country skiing holidays. Experienced skiers are on hand to ensure that visitors of all levels get the most out of their experience.

There are many methods of transport available to tourists – from sled dogs to snowmobiles, but if you’re looking to explore the snow whilst getting one heck of a workout, then it’s worth looking into taking a cross-country skiing excursion.

Cross-country skiing combines the conditions of skiing with a vigorous cardiovascular workout. For instead of sliding down a slope when held in place by sturdy boots, cross country skiing involves simultaneous use of your arms and legs.

Usually associated with the biathlon event (which combines cross country skiing with target shooting) at the Winter Olympics, many are attracted to the activity due to the ease of motion, low injury rate and relatively quick learning curve.

There are three styles of cross country skiing, with equipment tailored for the intensity of each exercise:

    * Classic – where you ski along pre-prepared trails which allows for even distribution of weight and offers a gentle introduction to the exercise.

    * Free/Skating – involves pushing the skis outwards in order to gain speed in a technique similar to downhill skiing, there are a variety of different styles for different terrain.

    * Telemark skiing – a variety of downhill skiing, which makes use of one ski that is longer than the other, encouraging weight distribution and pivoting to make difficult turns on a variety of difficult terrains.

The equipment tends to be a little lighter than conventional skiing equipment, with narrower skis and poles which have plastics disks or webbing near the bottom.

Instead of a solid boot that pretty much holds you in place, cross country ski boots are a little more flexible, with the heel allowing more freedom of movement to give the feeling that you’re walking on snow, rather than hurtling down it.

This increased flexibility allows the skier to traverse a variety of different conditions of snow. Grip is determined by the kind of wax you use on the bottom of your skis, and there are many different varieties which are used depending on conditions.

Cross country excursions often involve a stay in one of the many hotels in your chosen resort area. There are many different variations – from guided tours along pre-prepared trails to being pulled by dogs or horses (known as skijoring)

And there are a variety of different skiing techniques that can be utilised, and seeing as you usually don’t require as much training as downhill skiing it can be relatively easy to find the technique that’s comfortable for you.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind to keep yourself fit in the run-up to skiing holidays. Even though the chances of serious injury are less than downhill skiing, accidents can still happen, and it’s always best to be fit and prepared should anything happen.

Planning and implementing a fitness regime before you travel will mean you’re better conditioned to cope with what can be long distances, although there are usually a number of trails available for different experience levels which are supervised by trained professionals who are there to help should you run into difficulties.

So whether you’re an experienced skier or just want to try something new away from the slopes, cross country skiing is a great way to experience nature and get fit whilst gliding along at your own pace.

Paris Vacation

Paris Vacation

Paris is one of the premier capitals of the world especially the romantic amongst us; over the years it has become one of the most visited cities in the world. Many couples decide to take short stay in Paris as it is probably the most romantic city in the world; with a great deal to see and do that really a week is needed.

Visitors flock to see its many wonderful buildings; it has much to offer visitors who adore culture, even if it is only for a long weekend. Traveling through the city of Paris can be very enjoyable; the underground train system or Metro can take you to anywhere within the city and is simple to use.

It wouldn’t be possible to visit this city without a trip to the top of the famous steel structure known as the Eiffel Tower; it’s visible throughout most of the city but the views from the top of this huge steel structure are even more impressive. You can be assured of an even more beautiful sight if you visit in the evening when it is illuminated; taking a tour at the same time will teach you much more about this remarkable structure.

On your Paris trip ensure you add the famous Champs Elysees to your list of places to visit; it’s where you will find all the top class hotels, shops and restaurants. This avenue may be select but it attracts large numbers of visitors daily; the exclusive five star hotels situated in this more select part of the city might be out of most visitors’ price range.

The city’s famous museum, the Louvre is huge and worth a visit if you have the time; it holds in excess of 300,000 pieces of art, which cannot possibly be seen in a single visit. If you are in Paris on a short stay you must plan your time well; approximately 8 million visitors a year come to see the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, both of which are on display. Over the years, Paris has been home to many of the world’s famous artists; painters like Monet and Picasso spent many years here and a large number of their art works can be seen in Paris today.

The famous 19th century edifice built on Napoleons instructions, the Arc de Triomphe, is also in Paris; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. It also features an observatory to take in surrounding views; in particular those obtained along the lanes that lead from it.

Certainly it is not fair to believe that these are the only places in the city worth visiting; these are however, the most popular with regular tours arranged, many of which are either free or at a subsidized cost. It is fair to say that you won’t see everything on a Paris short stay of two or even three day break; that would require a longer visit as you probably won’t have time to visit the gothic churches and castles in only a few days.

Los Angeles

Posted on April 26th, 2008 in Travel Information by team-sk

Los Angeles

Los Angeles may be famed as the home of the star-studded Hollywood, but as the second largest metropolitan area in the US, it has a lot more to offer than just the glitz and glamour of showbiz and celebrity extravagance.

Hostels in Los Angeles are readily available, with travelers spoilt for choice among the city’s many districts. Backpackers can even select on the basis of cultural theme, with areas such as Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Little Ethiopia and Little India all offering their own take on Los Angeles city life.

Hollywood

Hollywood Boulevard includes the famous Walk of Fame that provides just such an opportunity, with a more detailed examination of the city’s celebrity links available close by in Grauman’s Chinese Theatre or Wax Museum.

For those keen on catching a glimpse of how the ‘other half’ live, a trip to either Malibu or Beverly Hills may also allow one to catch a glimpse of some of the opulent stars in the flesh. For those keen on some accompanying commentary on their trip, competitive tours are available for budgeting tourists with an eye for a deal.

Entertainment

In terms of entertainment, there’s plenty on offer and all made inexpensively accessible by the excellent subway system. Only those aged over 21 with identification can expect to get involved in the energetic nightlife scene – a door policy that is strictly abided by in every single club, bar or disco.

In terms of food, there is scarcely a better place than Los Angeles to sample the wealth of American delicacies on offer at one of the city’s many chain and independent eateries. However, for a sample of some international dishes, there is little better or cheaper way to do so than in one of the various ethnic districts.

Relaxing

Of course for many there will undoubtedly be a desire to relax on one of the city’s beaches or parks. Griffin Park is the second largest park in the country offering a great opportunity to experience some nature that provides a pleasant contrast to the overwhelming hubbub of the cityscape itself.

Conversely, the warm allure of Long Beach’s golden sands, or the seductive lap of waves at the more up-market Malibu Beach may be too much to resist for the weary backpacker. Santa Monica Beach, Paradise Cove and Redondo beaches are just some of the many others on offer.

Before settling down and becoming a copywriter for HostelBookers. Paul Scottyn did a backpacking tour of U.S.A, he checked out a variety of the country’s budget accommodation, including a number of most Los Angeles hostels.

Thinking Of Taking A Disney World Trip

Posted on April 17th, 2008 in Travel Information by team-sk

Thinking Of Taking A Disney World Trip

Where else in the world can you see robots, dinosaurs, ghosts, an African safari, princesses and pirates all within a quick tram ride? Amid the crocodiles, humidity and palm trees of Orlando, Florida, you’ll feel free as your imagination soars, whether you’re eight, eighteen, forty-eight or eighty!

Disney World is comprised of five different Disney parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Downtown Disney - all with their own wonders, amusements and unique decor.

The secret to getting a Disney World discount is to look into “Parkhopper” tickets. To get the most from your vacation, you can purchase 3, 5, 6, 7 or 10-day passes that allow you to go from one park to the next at your leisure. That way, if you miss a few attractions at one park, you can go back and hit them, without having to “kill time” there, or you can catch all your favorite rides again before you leave.

Many Disney vacation deals can be found online. For instance, United Vacations is offering a $200 Disney gift card with the purchase of a 5-night or longer flight and hotel package. Additionally, guests can purchase discount park passes.

Timeshares often offer free Disneyworld tickets if you’re willing to spend a morning listening to their sales presentation. Of course, there’s no obligation to buy, but not everyone will feel comfortable with the situation. OrlandoThemeParks.com has deep discounts, for example.

“Value season” for the Disney World resorts runs from January 1st - February 13th, July 20th - October 1st and November 30th - December 18th. In addition to shorter lines, you’ll save $50 (regular) or $150 (holiday) per night. Seasoned veterans say that it’s not really necessary to pay for the “room with a view,” as you’re not really there enough to appreciate the extra $100 worth. You’ll find that each Disney resort has its own hint of magic, whether you’re looking for an after-park spa session, the “rustic pioneer” feel, or the quintessential Grand Floridian vacation.

Many people coming to Disney World for their first time choose to purchase an all-in-one package deal. These packages are a stress-free way to plan, for sure! Imagine flying in to Orlando, Florida and hopping on a free shuttle bus, taking you right to a Disney resort.

Your reservation and bellhop are already waiting! You will receive your park tickets with your room card. You can put your luggage in your ornately decorated room and take a walk around the resort, as there’s much to see!

Browse gift shops, check out the lagoon pool area, select from one of many resort-specific Disney restaurants, or hop on a monorail that’ll take you anywhere in the magic world of Disney you’d ever want to go!

Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas!

There is so much to see and do in Las Vegas, especially when it comes to picking a hotel/restaurant/casino. It can be overwhelming. Las Vegas is full of fun and adventures and each hotel has a different theme.

The Venetian plays on the theme of Venice, Italy. There is even a river in the middle of the shopping area, where someone can take a gondola ride and be serenaded. People dress up in Renaissance-period costumes and sing, all behind the backdrop of designer stores and marble floors.

The Bellagio is a newer hotel and is a popular destination for weddings. Inspired by the Lake Como resort of Bellagio in Italy, Bellagio is famed for its elegance. One of its most notable features is an artificial lake between the building and the Strip, which houses the Fountains of Bellagio, a large dancing water fountain synchronized to music.

Treasure Island is certainly a fun place to stay with its pirate theme. Treasure Island originally intended to attract families with whimsical features and icons such as the skull and cross-bones strip marquee, a large video arcade and staged pirate battles nightly in “Buccaneer Bay” in front of the casino entrance on the Strip.

Driving in Cyprus

Posted on April 8th, 2008 in Travel Information by team-sk

Driving in Cyprus

Many visitors to the holiday island of Cyprus decide to hire a car in order to make the most of their visit. If you’ve never driven in Cyprus before then there a few things that you’ll need to be aware of.

Driving abroad often involves some minor differences from what you are used to home. These variations may take the form of different laws governing how you drive, or regulations about the state of your vehicle and insurance procedures.

Cyprus, as a member of the European Union, does have many similarities with other EU member states, although there are some variations that you need to be aware of.

The first thing that you’re likely to notice is that drivers on Cyprus drive on the left hand side of the road. If you’re travelling to the island from the UK then this means that you won’t need to adapt, but it is the opposite of all other western European countries.

As in the UK, the law states that drivers and front seat passengers must wear seatbelts. In the case of those travelling in the back of the vehicle, a seatbelt must also be worn if the car is fitted with one.

Children under the age of five must travel in the back of the car and must use a suitable child seat, rather than simply using the back seat in the way that an adult would.

All distances on the island are shown in kilometres and all speed limits are shown in kilometres per hour. If you’re used to thinking in terms of miles per hour, then you’ll need to take this into account.

There are a couple of items that you are required to carry in your car. These are two red warning triangles and are to be used to warn other vehicles of your presence, in case of an accident, breakdown or emergency.

In general, you should find it fairly easy to drive on the island. Make sure that you stick to the rules and drive safely.

You can find out about travelling to Cyprus by reading the airports in Cyprus guide, which has further contributions from Keith Barrett. This article may be used by any website publisher, though this resource box must always be included in full.
