eCommerce SEO Tips

eCommerce SEO Tips

According to Nielsen net ratings, every month, about half of all search engine queries are unique. This statistic, although vague and seemingly insignificant, is actually the greatest factor behind why eCommerce Soltuions fare so well in search. We interpret the statistic like this: Half of all searches cannot be predicted, the other half can be.

Great. So what does that have to do with eCommerce? The reason why eCommerce and SEO are better for each other than Forrest was for Jenny is due to the massive amount of content contained within the average eCommerce solution and that content’s ability to target both predictable and unpredictable (long-tail) search phrases.

eCommerce solutions have a major advantage over any other database driven site for a number of reasons.

    * Abundant Content: Unlike a blog, article directory or content managed site, thousands of search engine friendly pages can be literally uploaded and indexed by the search engines.

    * Easy Unique Content: A product or category page needs a few tech specs and a brief description. As long as that content is unique to the site, a webmaster can litter the search engines with products and categories. The time it would take for a blog or content managed site to reach that same level using unique content is staggering.

    * Targeting the Predictable & Unpredictable: Category pages can be targeted for predictable searches like “red widgets.” Product pages can capture the unpredictable ones like “red widgets with tassels”(provided they contain keyword-rich descriptions).

So how can you make the most of your eCommerce solution in the search engines? As promised here is a list of 25 general tips.

Most Importantly:

    * Pick the right solution: Get an eCommerce provider that allows you to do everything we mention in this list. And hey, what do you know? Bridgeline’s eCommerce Solution lets you do all of this… Crazy how that works out, no?

Onsite Optimization Tips

    * Unique title tags: The content contained within should not be repeated verbatim within the site.

    * Put your site name after the product or category name in the title tag: Use your site to Brand, use your search engine listing to get clicks.

    * Unique meta data: Take the time to make your meta data (description & keywords) unique for each page. Obviously, that can be tricky if you have 10,000 skus, so try and get your developer to populate that area with the product description.

    * Use H1 tags: And put your keywords in them. Go to your source. Search for ‘

    * Use more than manufacturer data: If your product pages only contain the specs and descriptions that your manufacturer provides, the search engines will lump that product page together with the hundreds of other ones out there with the same specs and descriptions, meaning it won’t find its way into the search engine result pages (SERPS).

    * Take the time to add unique copy to your product and category pages

    * Link to other products and categories from that copy

    * Use alt tags: I know. I heard too. They’re useless. Use them anyway. SEO is about a conglomeration of variables, not a single supreme one.

    * Have a clear category tree: Search engines like that.

    * Use a search engine friendly navigation: Text links are best. Don’t like text and want to use images? Make sure you use alt tags. Using flash or doing postbacks? Stop that!

    * Create an XML based sitemap and put it in Google webmaster tools

Offsite Optimization (Link Building) Tips
Link building is incredibly difficult for eCommerce sites because no one wants to link to your drop shipping site when they can link to the real thing or Target.com. Here is what you need to know:

    * Build domain authority: Domain authority is basically a measure of the number of high quality sites linking to yours. The more the better. So how do you get those?

    * Buy them: The quickest, easiest way to get Domain authority is to buy it at Text-Link-Ads.com. Unfortunately, it ain’t cheap.

    * Take your nique products and promote them in the online community: Get out into the online community, target some top bloggers in or around your industry and try to get them talking about your unique product. Again, this doesn’t really work for drop shippers because no one is going to link to your site when there are more reputable ones out there to link to so…

    * Put Something On Your site worth linking to: Compile a great list of resources, make how-to videos, develop a calculator, or other custom tool. If your products aren’t unique and link-friendly, you’ll need some site content that is.

    * Submit to directories: If you go to the forums they’ll tell you to submit to hundreds or thousands of directories. Don’t. Those are not high quality links, they don’t transmit domain authority, and they’ll only waste your time… What you need to do is find lists that bloggers or independent webmasters have made. If you must, submit to the directories, but be certain they are specific to your industry.

    * Submit articles: Again, the forums will tell you to submit as many articles as humanly possible. What I’m telling you is this:

o Write 3-5 quality articles on topics that people are talking about in your industry (like what I’m doing here).

o Submit the articles to a bunch of article directories.

o Link to those articles from your homepage.

o Link to your homepage from those articles

o Link Sculpt: Place a nofollow tag on any link that doesn’t point back to your homepage.

o Go to relevant blogs and forums where topics pertaining to those articles are being discussed, and drop links back to them.

    * Link exchanges: Despite popular opinion, still work… just don’t go overboard.

    * Deep link: Meaning, repeat 1-6 for your major categories.

    * Buy blog reviews: Go to sponsoredreviews.com or payperpost.com and buy some reviews from RELEVANT bloggers and point them back at your category or product pages. You’ll see a boost. It won’t last forever, but it will leave you in better standing than you were in to begin.

    * Answer questions on forums: And link back to your site in the signature

    * Outsource to India: There are plenty of Indians looking to make a buck on forums like Digital Point. They’ll generally do everything that I just mentioned from 1-10 and they’ll do it for cheap.

Seo Consultant India for Top Search Engine Marketing Services

Seo Consultant India for Top Search Engine Marketing Services

Lets begin with a note on proper keyword selection & organizing. First of all, there are a few basic characteristics of search queries/keywords that are important to note. The first is that only the most popular search queries are alike. For many sites, the targeted search keyword mix on a particular page will be quite broad. This is important as those pages will serve as the landing pages.

The second most important point is that studies suggest that between 40% and 55% of all search queries are three terms or longer. This indicates that people are starting to use the power of search to better target their requests.

Hence keeping these factors in mind it is incumbent upon the site owner or agency to develop a comprehensive keyword list that fits their site and marketing objectives. These lists can be generated using any of the search term sugestion tool like Wordtracker or Overture inventory search term tool.

However, the Google has minimum CTR threshold that must be met for keyword listings. Pending that Google automatically penalizes for poor click through. So it has to be made sure that the keyword selections meets that minimum requirement of click thorough.
Some general keyword selection & organizing tips are:

• Target Keyword selection

• Avoid single-word keywords (or at least be suspicious of them, as they aren’t usually very successful). Instead, start out with 2 or 3 word keyword phrases.

• Use keywords that precisely describe the products and/or services that you actually have to offer. Collect all keywords that are highly related to a particular product or service into a single Ad Group, and then show an ad about that exact product or service. Use the 2500 Ad Groups available to you in your account to your advantage - to advertise each product or service that you offer in a very targeted way.

• Avoid ‘what if’ keywords. An example of a ‘what if’ keyword: an advertiser selling greeting cards running on the keyword ‘Christmas gifts’. Well the logic is, because cards normally go with gifts, ‘what if’ someone searching on ‘gifts’ might also need cards? Better to run on the keyword ‘Christmas cards’.

• Thoroughly understand how each of the keyword matching options functions. Then make an informed decision, and don’t hesitate to experiment. Full details on the matching options are available in the AdWords FAQ

• If you are using broad or phrase matching, then use negative keywords to your advantage. Info on this is also in the FAQ.

Selecting the SEO Consultant That is Best for Your Business

As a business owner, it is impossible to ignore the power of the Internet. With a worldwide audience only a mouse click away, most business owners are jumping at the opportunity to create a website for their business. In addition, many businesses exist entirely online, which means an attractive and easy to use website is imperative for success. But, it doesn’t matter how great a website looks if no one ever finds it. For these reasons, it is necessary to take steps to optimize your websites for search engines. This process is known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

Taking Steps to Optimize Your Website

When it comes to optimizing your website, there are a number of steps you can take. Some business owners attempt to optimize their websites on their own, but this is usually a bad idea because it takes a high level of specialized knowledge in order to optimize a site effectively. In addition, search engine optimization is a timely endeavor.

Since most business owners are already multi-tasking, they rarely have the time necessary to properly implement search engine optimization strategies. For these reasons, it is usually best to hire a professional that can optimize the site to its fullest potential or that can provide you with the proper training to guarantee you get the job done right.

Selecting an SEO Consultant
Since SEO is becoming an ever-increasingly popular form of marketing, more and more “SEO experts” are appearing on the Internet every day. So, how are you supposed to separate the quality consultants from those that cannot truly get the job done?

When searching for an SEO expert, there are a number of things to watch for:

The SEO expert should offer link building campaigns as one of the many services provided. Link building campaigns are highly effective when it comes to getting high listings with search engines because they help add credibility to your website.
The SEO expert should provide directory submission services that will ensure your website is frequently crawled by search engine spiders.

The expert should also provide you with a spreadsheet that shows the directories your site has been submitted to. This way, you can stay fully aware of what is taking place with your site.
A variety of different SEO packages should be offered, making it possible for you to find the one that is best for your business needs.

The SEO expert should be willing to train you in search engine optimization if you do wish to do the work yourself. At the same time, he or she should be capable of doing the work for you if you don’t have the time or interest in doing it yourself.
All aspects of website design should be made available to you, ranging from creating the layout of your website to creating the content.

All of these components play an important role in a website marketing campaign.
The SEO Consultant expert should provide you with seo tools to ensure you reach the broadest market possible and allow you to effectively monitor the success of your site.

Finding an SEO expert that offers all of these services is a rarity. One expert that does provide all of these services and more, however, is Tyler Dewitt. Learn more at Dewitts SEO and Website Design

To Hire or Not To Hire an SEO Consultant

Posted on March 21st, 2008 in Internet Marketing by team-sk

To Hire or Not To Hire an SEO Consultant

It is crucial that a small business online’s website appears as a top search on the SERP or search engine results page. The importance of a website’s seo also known as search engine optimization to satisfy search engines like Google and Yahoo is apparent.

Keywords, unique page titles and link building are helpful in meeting this. To push these forward into effect depends on the resources that manage internal matters and to know what needs to be outsourced according to Gord Hotchkiss, CEO and president of Enquiro, a search marketing agency, and the chairperson of SEMPO, a non-profit organization serving the search engine marketing industry.

Hotchkiss adds that outsourcing for seo should not let small business owners lose control over their website. Optimizing a website has an all-inclusive quality which normally leads these small businesses to lose their command on their online sites. Hotchkiss believes that management of these sites should be done in partnership without sacrificing control. He also adds that seo consultants can contribute a lot to small business owners in improving their websites.

Website managing director of Last Night of Freedom, Matt Mavir agrees with Hotckiss, saying that business involving seo takes up so much time with the constant algorithmic changes in Google. He trusts that seo consultants are very beneficial for businesses rooted in highly challenging and aggressive fields. Mavir recognizes the steep competition in being on top of the search engine lists.

However, founder of S&A Industries with 23 employees and six websites, Aaron Rubin doesn’t find having an seo consultant beneficial. Rubin admits that seo work is vital in his business since search engine ranking is important in generating their sales. He finds the contributions of seo consultant as nearly insignificant as they can only alter keywords and page titles.

Editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land and Web consultant, Danny Sullivan agrees with Rubin. Sullivan believes that a small business doesn’t necessarily need an seo consultant for as long as they are willing to do the job themselves.

Editor in chief of the Click Z Network that manages the Internet marketing industry, Rebecca Lieb advises that employing an seo consultant should be based on a business’s ROI and it is also important to be updated on the continuous change in algorithms of search engines.

President of Michigan Integrated Solutions, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Web design and hosting company, Meg Geddes presents the benefits of an seo consultant in an online business. She says that she understands the business first and foremost to be able to provide relevant search phrases.

Geddes says that their company can provide the time to look after the changes in algorithms at Google, MSN and the like search engines for the companies that can even barely upgrade their Web content.

Hotchkiss emphasizes the significance of the relationship with an seo consultant. He says that finding the right one for the company is very important in improving online content and presentation. Along with this is an outsider’s perspective that can truly help in improving a company’s Website through receiving an expert’s advice in technical matters of seo.

However, he also shows no guarantee especially since it is almost unpredictable to know what Google presents as top search. Lieb agrees and says that no optimizer can make a promise in giving an assured seo that can result to a top search.

Current editor of Search Engine Watch, Elizabeth Osmeloski warns that there are a lot of scams and incompetent seo consultants. She emphasizes how crucial it is to identify an effective consultant for a company and in finding one; a company must avoid a hard sell and should be able to give queries on the service offered. Hotchkiss adds that a good consultant should have a keen interest in understanding the business to be presented on the Web.

How to Choose a Good SEO Consultant

Posted on March 21st, 2008 in Internet Marketing by team-sk

How to Choose a Good SEO Consultant

If a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, though he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

This may have been correct in the business paradigm of the 19th and 20th century, but in the new paradigm of the Internet, it no longer holds true - especially if you substitute ‘house’ with ‘website’.

Over 88% of Americans who shop online use Search Engines to conduct research on what they are buying and the three large search engines have over 80% of the market between them. This means that you must achieve good ranking in one or all of these search engines in order to reach your target customers. Because search engine optimization (SEO) is better left to an expert, this means you must choose a SEO consultant to enhance your web presence and maximize site usability, thus increasing your profits.

You would choose a SEO company the same way you would assess any company you were going to purchase a service from. Find out how long they’ve been in business, and see if they’ll tell you exactly how it is they do their work. Ask them about their previous work and clients and check if you can use these clients as references.

Check their methodology. Don’t expect exact specifics, but ensure they are offering more than just ‘submission services’ and ‘meta-tag optimization’. Look for their ability to perform on-page optimization, to improve site architecture, to research good keywords, and to optimize content, and to do link building. SEO doesn’t use a “magic bullet” and it takes a variety of techniques to improve search engine placement. If they have a blog, read a few of their posts and see if their techniques make sense or come across as being “tricky”.

Make sure that the SEO consultant has thorough, up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the major search engines and their algorithms. These algorithms are ever changing and improving so the SEO consultant should be able to show that he/she keeps up with the ever changing markets by belonging to various forums, discussion groups and peer organizations.

Look at their affiliations. Do they belong to the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? Do they belong to any of the search engine marketing or online advertising trade associations? Who are their clients? Are their clients reputable? You can usually get a good indication of a company’s reputation by seeing who they align themselves with or who they don’t.

Another overlooked factor to check is this: Do they rank naturally for SEO related keywords? If they cannot even rank their website for even one reasonably competitive keyword phrase, this should set off some alarm bells. After all, how can a SEO company do something for you that they can’t even perform for themselves?

Search engine optimization is not a ‘once-off’ magic pill to get you to the top of the rankings, and beware SEO consultants who offer this. Ensure that your SEO consultant not only can increase your ranking but can keep you there with a maintenance program. Check to see what the long-term strategy is going to be employed on your behalf.

Finally, enquire about their business methods. Do they subscribe to the Best Practices for the SEO/Search Engine Marketing Industry? Are they using white hat or black hat SEO techniques? All these are questions are important considerations for choosing the right SEO for your business.
